Which version do I need?
I purchased C&C many years ago and am wondering if I need to upgrade to the new books or not? I've read the game hasn't really changed since it released. Is that true? Below is a pic of the books I have currently. I seem to have misplaced my Castle Keeper's Guide, so I have to find it so I can see which version I have.
That would be the fourth printing if memory serves (not edition) and it does have the tweaks to the Barbarian and Illusionist classes among a few others. So you should be fine to go with it as is, no new books required. That said, the Adventurer's Backpack-PHB combo would be the thing to invest in if you feel you absolutely must have a new copy of the rules simply for the expanded equipment and a few other nice options.
I'd wait for the 8th Printing to be available since it will have the High Level matterial for all the classes in it instead of the Castle Keeper's Guide and is adding the RuneMark Class.
and some extra spells.. I would encourage everyone to get the latest, 8th printing of the players handbook.
