I just started a new game on Roll20 with folks from FL, NE, and IL. These are folks I know from gaming at GenCon, DiceTower Con, and BGG Con, as well as from my FLGS. We will be playing once or twice a month based on everyone's schedule. I was the only one to have played C&C previously. Some of these were in my previous campaign running The One Ring.
The game started out over the previous week with meeting to roll up characters online. It is what many consider a large group, 7 players with a possible 8th, but going back to old-school style gaming, that is no problem for me. A male Elven Thief, male Half-Elven (Human lineage), male Cleric (Firthnach)/Illusionist multi-class, female Half-Orc Barbarian, female Human Ranger, female Human Knight, female Human Cleric (Tuatheal), and the 7th character to be created, but I am guessing it will be some sort of Magic-User.
We are playing in Aihrde, starting with my Goblins March module, available here in the Knights Downloads. The initial game session went well, a few bits of learning from those that haven't played on Roll20, but using the character sheet that is available there eased some of that. We are using Google+ Hangouts for voice and video, though with the changes Google is making, the API will no longer be available sometime in April. We should be able to still use it, but will have to set up the call manually, not a big deal, can paste the link into Chat or send email with it. When Roll20 fixes their WebRTC setup we may go back to using it.
I do have a Roll20 Pro account for the advanced features, like dynamic lighting (don't confuse with automatic fog-of-war removal, API access like bject ordering and special effects, more storage space, and so on make it something I enjoy, but it isn't necessary and can be easily used with the free version. I don't know if they opened up free play on tablets, but I know at one point if anyone was going to use a non-Windows tablet, i.e. an iPad or Android, a Pro subscription was required.
So a couple of questions...
- Will play online such as Roll20 qualify for KotC? If so, how do we log the time played?
- Can we get a Campaign Report forum setup? This would be a place where CK's can post happenings in their games, the level of detail provided would vary from CK to CK, and I am hoping to get my players to post as well, from their characters perspective. I know we can do this in the normal Troll Lords forums, but it would be nice to have one specifically for KotC. I know I will probably cross-post it to at least Dragonsfoot to continue to spread the word.
The first session recap can be found here - http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&p=1827231#p1827231
I think online play ought to be considered the same as organized play, so long as the game is advertised, open to new players, and uses the C&C rules.
Online play for ongoing games among people who already are acquainted are not really different from a game in your living room (and I think that is important too).
Agreed, three of the players in this campaign are not part of our crew, met one at my FLGS, and got him interested in the game, and he got two of his friends from the east coast in as well. All of them are brand new to C&C. So far, as of now, 8 players, all have purchased the 6th Printing PHB. Had our second session last week and was introducing more rules. Also spent a good amount of time working with Roll20 this week to tweak it more, working on some macro's. I am looking at making a creature compendium as journal entries (character sheets) to capture at least the basic stats, and will expand on that over time. For now just building entries for the creatures and NPC's in the campaign as they will be coming up.
